NATE SZARMACH (shar-mack)

Recent Selected Work

Nate Szarmach (b. 1995) is an American artist whose work merges traditional painting practices with contemporary subject matter. Working in painting and drawing, he develops a quiet visual language that draws from figuration, surrealism, and conceptual sculpture. His compositions often focus on domestic environments and the psychological conditions they evoke, addressing themes of faith, identity, and shame.

Szarmach was born in Virginia and studied architecture at James Madison University. Largely self-taught as a painter, he incorporates architectural methodologies into his practice, allowing considerations of structure, atmosphere, and compositional balance to guide his approach. He frequently works from recognizable visual sources, embedding his paintings with subtle references to religious iconography and film stills. Rather than presenting fixed narratives, these nods to the familiar instill his artworks with meaning while keeping them open-ended.

His work has appeared in numerous publications and is held in private collections in the United States and abroad. In recent years, Szarmach was recognized as an Arc Salon Semi-Finalist, and his drawings and paintings have been included in several solo exhibitions, group exhibitions, and curated online presentations. He now lives and works in Austin, Texas.
